Boat problem with cabbage, wolf, sheep

Logic Level 2

Once upon a time a farmer went to a market and purchased a wolf, a sheep, and a cabbage. On his way home, the farmer came to the bank of a river and rented a boat. But crossing the river by boat, the farmer could carry only himself and one of his animals or his cabbage

If left unattended together, the wolf would eat the sheep, or the sheep would eat the cabbage.

how many times did the farmer have to cross the river with the cabbage, wolf or sheep?

  1. Sheep to the other side. (Wolf won't eat cabbage)
  2. Take the wolf to the other side
  3. Return to the original shore with the sheep (So the wolf won't eat it) By now we have the sheep, farmer, and cabbage on one side, and the wolf on the other. Let's continue
  4. The farmer takes the cabbage over to the wolf
  5. The farmer comes back with the sheep All are safely on the other side Hope this helps! It might be easier if you draw it out.

Good Explanation!

  • Take the sheep over 1
  • return
  • Take the wolf or cabbage over 2
  • return with sheep 3
  • take the wolf or cabbage over (whichever you didn't bring last time) 4
  • return
  • take sheep over 5

5 7 \frac{5}{7} the farmer is bringing something over with him

I assumed that returning also counted as a trip. So I got something that wasn't in the options lol
