Clever you!, Got a clue?

Logic Level 3

Gunda and Badmaash were the two notorious convicts, who were now arrested, and the police called you for a brief interrogation with them.

It is known that both of them tell the truth and lie on alternate days. On a particular day, if one of them tells the truth, then the other one lies. For an explicit example, if Gunda lies today, then Badmaash tells the truth. And tomorrow Gunda will tell the truth and Badmaash will lie. They both are known to this fact. and they both are in the same interrogation room.

Here is the interrogation done by Y o u You :

Y o u You asked G u n d a Gunda , "Will you tell the truth today?"

G u n d a Gunda replied, "Yes, I Will."

Y o u You asked B a d m a a s h Badmaash , "Is Gunda lying?"

B a d m a a s h Badmaash replied, "Yes, he is lying."

Y o u You asked G u n d a Gunda again, "If this whole interrogation ( a s as s t a t e d stated a b o v e above ) was done y e s t e r d a y yesterday and then If I had asked you that, "if B a d m a a s h Badmaash was telling the truth?", what could possibly be your reply?"

G u n d a Gunda replied, "then I would have replied a NO."

It can be concluded from the above statement that:

Can you catch some liars for me. Here are some of them who make statements worth deceiving
Badmaash was telling the truth on interrogation day Cannot be determined. Gunda was telling the truth on interrogation day Badmaash was lying on the interrogation day It is an impossible scenario. Gunda was lying on interrogation day

Abhay, great question of "gunda" and "badmaash" ;)

The answer is that Gunda was telling the truth that day. Suppose Gunda was lying, then he would have replied affirmatively for the first question but then Badmaash should have replied negatively to the second question. But then for the third question, again Gunda should have told the truth yesterday so he should have replied Yes, Badmaash lies yesterday which he didnt. So, since first and third statements are satisfactory, but the second violates the conditions, Gunda must not be lying that day.

Now, lets check the truthness. If Gunda was telling the truth that day, he should reply affirmatively, which he did. Then Badmaash who wpuld be lying should reply negatively which he did. Then for the third statement gunda should have lied yesterday. Since Badmaash lies today, he would have spoke truth yesterday. So yesterday's liar Gunda would reply No,Badmaash is lying, which he did confess today when he spoke the truth.

So, since this possibilty satisfies all the conditions of the question, Gunda was telling the truth on the day of interrogation.

Yes, this is the exact and right approach for the Question. Thanks a lot for your solution. :)

I marked "Cannot be determined".Not because of the question because of the choices. If Gunda was telling the truth on interrogation day then Badmaash was lying on the interrogation day. Both choices can be mark on the answer section.Pls correct me if i wrong.Maybe i didn't understand the question well.

In this question we cant choose either of the two. Using logic, we have to determine which condition satisfies like I did in my solution. Gunda canot be lying that day because it violates the conditions of the question as explained in my solution.

@Ashish Menon Yes.But,with the same logic Badmaash cannot telling the truth that day.Because if he was telling the truth then Gunda was lying on the day.which is violate the conditions as you say.I'm trying the say that İf a person assume that Badmaash was lying on that day he will get the same conclision as you are. Because as you mentioned at the question "On a particular day, if one of them tells the truth, then the other one lies." So,Gunda was telling the truth on interrogation day if and only if Badmaash was lying on the interrogation day.

@Mehmet Boybek That is exactly what i am telling badmaash is not telling the truth that day. You yourself have explained it. Since Badmaash is lying, Gunda is telling thr truth.

@Mehmet Boybek Again I am not the problem creator. Plz give the credits of this great question to the correct person. Yes, I have proved that badmaash is lying on that day. It is the same conclusion because it is the same assumption.

I hate it so much when I misread just one sentence that is important and it causes me to fail 🛀

Grahamové , you can try other questions of the set, I have given a link at the bottom of the question, and this time don't misread any of the statements. :)

I don't understand why the given options are listed as such. Doesn't the set up to the problem indicate that if one of them is telling the truth, then the other is lying? Why is it that the options with regards to one of them lying or telling the truth are split up into four instead of two? Isn't it also true that "Badmaash was lying" is a valid answer?
