1 5 + 3 x = 23 40 x 5 x + 15 5 x = 23 40 x + 15 5 x = 23 40 x + 15 = 23 ( 5 x ) 40 x + 15 = 115 x 40 x + 15 = 23 x 8 8 ( x + 15 ) = 23 x 8 x + 120 = 23 x 23 x 8 x = 120 15 x = 120 x = 120 15 x = 8 \large \begin{aligned} & & \frac { 1 }{ 5 } +\frac { 3 }{ x } & =\frac { 23 }{ 40 } \\ & \Longrightarrow & \frac { x }{ 5x } +\frac { 15 }{ 5x } & =\frac { 23 }{ 40 } \\ & \Longrightarrow & \frac { x+15 }{ 5x } & =\frac { 23 }{ 40 } \\ & \Longrightarrow & x+15 & =\frac { 23(5x) }{ 40 } \\ & \Longrightarrow & x+15 & =\frac { 115x }{ 40 } \\ & \Longrightarrow & x+15 & =\frac { 23x }{ 8 } \\ & \Longrightarrow & 8(x+15) & =23x \\ & \Longrightarrow & 8x+120 & =23x \\ & \Longrightarrow & 23x-8x & =120 \\ & \Longrightarrow & 15x & =120 \\ & \Longrightarrow & x & =\frac { 120 }{ 15 }\\ & \therefore & x & =\boxed{8} \end{aligned}

Nice question @lorenz navales nice solution @Armain Labeeb btw, I did trial and error of the options since the lcm is 40. :P

Traditionally solving easy questions now is kinda boring, but questions like this in which we can get the answer by simple trial and error becomes too interesting. :) Looking forward to see more of such questions from you in future.

Use common sense, the "x" is in denominator. Only for x=40, or x=8 can make the LCM 40, as the answer is 23 40 \frac{23}{40}

1 5 + 3 x = 23 40 3 x = 23 40 1 5 3 x = 23 8 40 3 x = 15 40 3 x = 3 8 x = 8 \dfrac{1}{5}+\dfrac{3}{x} = \dfrac{23}{40}\\ \dfrac{3}{x} = \dfrac{23}{40} - \dfrac{1}{5}\\ \dfrac{3}{x} = \dfrac{23-8}{40}\\ \dfrac{3}{x} = \dfrac{15}{40}\\ \dfrac{3}{x} = \dfrac{3}{8}\\ x=\boxed{8}
