Forbidden number in Fibonacci

Let F n = F n 1 + F n 2 F_n = F_{n-1}+ F_{n-2} be the n th n^\text{th} Fibonacci number ( n > 0 ) (n>0) , where F 1 = 1 F_1=1 and F 2 = 1 F_2=1 .

If we consider the last 3 digits of the Fibonacci numbers, not all numbers from 0 to 999 appear in the sequence.

What is the largest integer from 0 to 999 that doesn't appear in this sequence?

It seemed a shame to not have a solution on this problem, but I appreciate the (im)practicality of writing a comprehensive solution.

So I generated the last 3 Fibonacci digits into a table, alongside n n (associative), an index from 0 to 999 (which has been reversed to prevent having to scroll most of the way down the page to see the answer - this column is not associative with the Fibonacci digits on the same row), and the number of times that each index from 0 to 999 occurs (associative only with the Index on the same row).

Fortunately, the last 3 digits of the Fibonacci sequence repeats, but (unfortunately) at n=1500.

Sorry for the massive table.

Nice and simple, but how did you know the pair (1,1) would appear again in the fibonacci sequence? Couldn't it have been possible, that some other pairs of numbers had formed a cycle? If this was the case, your while loop would have been infinite.

One of the integer pairs must appear twice in the sequence, as there are only 1 000 000 pairs.

Good point. How to show mathematically that (1,1) must be part of the cycle is the separate question. It's first pair I "begun" with and it terminated so I don't have a reason to go further.
