Geometry Level 3

On the same side of a straight line three circles are drawn as follows:

  • A circle with a radius of 4 cm is tangent to the line.
  • The other two circles are identical, and each is tangent to the line and to the other two circles.

What are the possible radii of these two identical circles?

A. \ \, 24 cm only
B. \ \, 20 cm only
C. \ \, 16 cm only
D. \ \, 24 and 20 cm only
E. \ \, 20 and 16 cm only
F. \ \, 16 and 24 cm only
G. \ \, 16, 20, 14 cm only

Here is a rough sketch of the problem's condition. I hope many would have got the 'hint' in the 'note'

Lets concentrate on the part that has the solution.

In the O N A \triangle { O }^{ \prime }NA we have O A 2 = O N 2 + A N 2 { { O }^{ \prime }A }^{ 2 }={ { O }^{ \prime }N }^{ 2 }+{ AN }^{ 2 } . Or ( r + 4 ) 2 = r 2 + ( r 4 ) 2 { \left( r+4 \right) }^{ 2 }={ r }^{ 2 }+{ \left( r-4 \right) }^{ 2 } , solving which gives the value of r = 16 , 0 r=16,0

If my solution is taking time to show up, please tell me. I will reduce the space of the images. Even if anyone using the mobile app is having a problem, notify me, I will re-edit my solution.

No problem, its not taking much time. By the way I was going to post the same solution before I saw yours as solved it the same way but I used the distance formula

It is good. You may use M/S paint to draw sketches.

@Niranjan Khanderia Thanks, I will take that as a compliment :D

Well the circle couldn't be more symmetric had not I used a broken compass.

And a ruler for the lines. :)

:) Your name is 'Niranjan', is somehow India related to you? :D ....just was curious
