there exists two possibilities they are $1^1=1^1$ and $2^4=4^2$ the answer may also be $1\times1 =1$ or $2\times4=8$

If I wrote

$x^{x} = x^{x}$

Then 1 is the correct answer Hahaha but no problem...

but i am saying that x may be = y if not it must be mentioned in the problem that x and y are distinct positive real numbers my boy

it is given, x is not equal to y. hence the only solution to the question is x=4 , y=2 and vice versa. In both the cases, xy =8

only 2^4 = 4^2 is possible. so answer is 2 x 4 = 8.
