But if you make a ratio, 1:2, then multiply both sides by 9.5, 1 9.5=2 9.5 9.5=19 She should be 9 and a half years old!

Say I'm the narrator of the question. Maybe I was born in 2000. I was 2 years old in 2002. At that point, my brother was just half of my age, or 1 year old. Someone 1 year old in 2002 was born in 2001. Now I am 19. It must therefore be 2019. Since it's 2019 now and my brother was born in 2001, my brother is 18 years old.

Also, there's nothing in the problem to specify the gender of the narrator, so saying "she" should be 9 and a half years old isn't right, "the narrator" would be better.

If you want to think of it in terms of formulas, you should think y-x=1 where y is the narrator amd x is the brother. Then, when the narrator is 19, the equation reads (19)-x=1. Solve for x.

When he was 2, his brother was 1,half his age. So some people get carried away and half the narrator's age.

It is given that when the person was 2 years old, his brother was just half of his age. Therefore, we get: 2*(1/2)=1. i.e his brother's age is 1 year. Now the person is 19 year old. So, his brother should be 1 year younger than him. Hence, his brother's age is 18 years.

that's loooong!

If his brother was half his age when he was two that means his brother was 1 year old. So the brother will always be one year younger as the answer is 18.

When he was 2 years old, his brother was 1 year old. So if he was 19 years old, his brother would be 18 years old since when he was 2 his brother is 1 year younger. :)

Since the author is 2 years old at the time and the younger brother is half that age, this means that there is a 1 year difference (2/2 = 1). Knowing that age is a scale, we can conclude and say that the difference will always be 1 year. Tn = n - 1, where n > 0.

There is two brothers . when elder brother was 2 years the younger brother was 1 year. So younger brother was half the elder brother age .So now the elder brother age is 19. So don 't divide it by 2. Because when he was 3 yrs the younger one become 2 yrs.Now the younger one age is 2. But now it is not half . It was less by one . So 19 - 1=18 . So the younger age is 18

2÷2 (finding one half of something) =1 so his brother was one.

2 (his age) - 1 (brother's age) = 1 (age difference)

19 ( current age) - 1 (age difference) = 18

Would have been harder with a bigger starting age and smaller fraction

I am saying any questions not a easy or hard... All questions are interesting...

The diference between the ages is: 2 2 = 1 \frac{2}{2}=1 Because is the half, then the first guy is older then, if it has 19, his brother is: 19 1 = 18 19-1=18

Sean Lee
Apr 19, 2015

2 divided by 2 is 1. Which means that they are only a year apart. So, when he is 19, his brother is 18.

The solution lies in the thinking and not in getting carried away by the sentence formulation of the problem. When the boy/girl was 2 years, half of two is 1, and that's the age of the brother; but essentially, with age between people, the difference is going to be constant. Hence at 19 years, the brother is going to be 18.

Write a solution. Let X = the age of my brother. X = 1/2 (2) X = 1

19-2=17 is the year passed by

The older brother ages twice as fast as the first because his twin brother was only half his age at 2 so the solution is 19/2 = 8 years old
