NH-1 to IIT(chemistry)

Chemistry Level 3

Most of us would have been aware Grignard reagent ie RMgX and it formation

R X + M g > R M g X R-X +Mg--->RMgX

X=Cl,Br etc.

now 'A' is added to CH(3)MgBr to obtain an monohydric teritiary alcohol with 4 carbon and 10 H?

give your answer as the serial no of the 7 letter of IUPAC naming of 'A' in english alphabets.

for eg if name is pentane-then letter e is the 7th letter and answer is reported as 5.

The answer is 15.

The alcohol is tertiary butanol.It contains 4 carbon and 10 hydrogen atoms. Grignard reagents characteristically give nucleophilic addition or acid base reaction . The given compound cannot be prepared by acid base in a single step. We know carbonyl compounds give nucleophilic addition most readily due to electrophilic carbonyl carbon . Simply The compound would Be Acetone (IUPAC- Propan-2-one) . Because CH3- Will attack carbonyl carbon and leading to formation of our required alcohol. Acetone is its common name and commonly used as nail polish remover.

by the way problem's name is nice NH-1 Runs from Delhi to Attari! :P
