Let x 2 + y 2 = 36 { x }^{ 2 }+{ y }^{ 2 }=36 and x y = 32 xy=32 . What is the positive value of x + y x+y ?

\(\begin{array}{} (x + y)^{2} &= x^{2} + 2xy + y^{2} \\ &= (x^{2} + y^{2}) + 2(xy) \\ &= 36 + 2(32) \\ &= 100 \\ (x + y) &= \sqrt{100} \\ &= 10 \end{array}\)

Yeah that's probably the best way to do it

Well I don't know any other solution except that. Are there any other way?

Isolating x or y and substituting it into the other equation takes much longer but works as well.
