Firstly, hydrogen in presence of Pd/C catalyst removes the unsaturation via catalytic hydrogenation. Next mono-bromination occurs at one of the carbon. Mg is added which forms a Grignard reagent (cyclohexyl-MgBr) to which heavy water is added. The Grignard reagent abstracts a deuterium and forms 1-deutero cyclohexane and MgBrOD as a by-product.
