Water has the ability to act as an acid as well as base. It acts as an acid with N H 3 NH_3 and as a base with H 2 S H_2S . H X 2 O ( l ) + N H X 3 ( a q ) O H X ( a q ) + N H X 4 X + ( a q ) H X 2 O ( l ) + H X 2 S ( a q ) H X 3 O X + ( a q ) + H S X ( a q ) \ce{H_2O (l) + NH_3 (aq) \rightarrow OH^- (aq) + NH_4 ^+ (aq)} \\ \ce{H_2O (l) + H_2S (aq) \rightarrow H_3O^+ (aq) + HS^- (aq)} The auto-protolysis of water takes place as follows : H X 2 O ( l ) + H X 2 O ( l ) H X 3 O X + ( a q ) + O H X ( a q ) \ce{H_2O (l) + H_2O (l) \rightarrow H_3O^+(aq) + OH^- (aq)}

@Ram Mohith Just a minor typo.......it should be auto-protolysis.........!!!

Some who still dwell in the shadow of Arhennius myopic theory of acids and bases, may say water is a neutral oxide.

@Ekene Franklin Yes. Also, they say that the pH value of pure and distilled water is equal to 7.
