there must be a condition that no two people share same rank

its understood as there is no such condition shown
You can actually tell that Kamal is a boy, because it says him.
number of boys = x number of girls =2x therefore x+2x=60 . x=20, number of boys 20. kamal rank 17, ahead of him 9 girls 17-9=8, so after him in the rank 20-8=12,

Your answer is correct, but your argument is wrong. There are 20 boys and 40 girls. Kamal's position is 17. That means there are 16 students ahead of him out of which, 9 were girls. So there are 7 BOYS ahead of Kamal. Kamal is 8th boy and there are 12 boys below his rank. I hope this is clear.
i like your short cut method
I don't understand that number of boys 20. kamal rank 17, ahead of him 9 girls 17-9=8, so after him in the rank 20-8=12.

number of students is 60. in the question where there are twice as many girls as boys so number of boys is x and number of girls 2x therefor number of students x+2x=60. 3x=60. x=(60/3)=20: then kamal his boy his rank is 17 rank ahead of him 9 girls are with kamal 17-9=8; total boys 20; hence 20-8=12 so after him 12 boys are there:

@Venkappa Bhajantri – I want to know. How do you know 8 people(17-9=8) are all boys?
Log in to reply
@Prae Jaruwan – 17 is a kamal rank ahead of him 9 girls 17-9=8; and after him 20-8=12 ; 20 total number of boys
There is a slight problem with this question. You need to clarify whether Kamal is a boy or a girl. This can make the answer differ by 1, 12 or 13. However, since this is a multiple choice question, this is not much of a problem.

The question says 'him'. So obviously, he is a boy.
boy is 1/3 of the groups which make them 20/60...if kamal rank is 17th from the top and 9 above him are girl,this will makes no 1 to 7 are boy..7+1(kamal)=8 which eventually leaves the remaining 12 boys below kamal
That means kamal is ranked 22nd.
you can solve it simply by assuming the situation....
yes kamal should be a boy according to problem !
nice ques.
Let the number of boys be x,then, number of girls = 2x. Therefore, x+2x= 3x = 60. or, x = 20. So,number of boys = 20 and number of girls = 40. Number of students behind Kamal in the rank = 60-17 = 43. Number of girls ahead of Kamal = 9. Number of girls behind Kamal = 40-9 = 31. Therefore, Number of boys behind Kamal in the rank = 43 -31 = 12.
in finding the no. of boys:
let x=no. of boys , 2x=no. of girls , 60= no. of all students
x=60-2x
x+2x=60
3x=60
3x/3=60/3
x=20
In finding the no. of boys after Kamal:
let y=no. of boys after him
no. of boys after him = no. of boys - (Kamal's rank - 9 girls ahead of him)
y = 20 - (17-9)
y = 20 - 8
y = 12
*therefore, there are 12 boys after Kamal in the Class Ranking!
number of boys = x number of boys =2x therefore x+2x=60 . x=20, number of boys 20. kamal rank 17, ahead of him 9 girls 17-9=8, so after him in the rank 20-8=12,
number of boys = x number of boys =2x therefore x+2x=60 . x=20, number of boys 20. kamal rank 17, ahead of him 9 girls 17-9=8, so after him in the rank 20-8=12,
you can do until 17 person from the top.
yes. you are right. I did like this only.
bhai log concept is ki x=boys and y= girls,y=2x. to 20 boys and 40girls,since kamal at 17 rank so 17-9=8. so now left boys are20-8=12
no.of students is 60 so kamal ranked 17 and 9 girls ahead him so 17-9=8 and logically 8+12=20.and girls are twice than boys so20*2=40 and 40+20=60 which are total no .of students .so there are 12students after him.....easy...
how to solve this? The summation S of the first 60 terms are determined of the sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12, 13, 14, 21, 22, 23, 24… What are the last two digits of S?
yeah i do agree with him..the situation was not clearly stated but it was challenging though..i didnt solve it
but surely you have to include Kamal in the calculation therefore: the number of girls is 40 the number of boys is 20 17position-9girls=8 plus one for Kamal so 9 20-9 = 11 boys remaining
Where have i gone wrong?
Log in to reply
Kamal already included in that 17 position because he's at 17th so you don't need to add him again into the calculation.
Well, when will my habit of making trivial calculations errors leave! (Here's what I did : http://puu.sh/7bfcW.png
Adam and Bob went to a orchard to pick apples.After picking, Adam realised that if he had picked more 47 apples, he would have twice as many apples as Bob. Bob realised that if he had picked more 47 apples, he would have twice as many apples as Adam.How many apples did they pick all total?
g= 2 b, 60=g+b, 60=2b + b, Then we get b= 20 g=40, Kamal(boys) ranked 17. Then the boys= 17-9=8. Then 20-8=12 boys
.
girls + boys = 60
girls = 2 * boys . . . = > . . . 2boys + 1boys =60 . . . = > . . . boys =20
rank 17 . . . = > . . . 16 persons ahead, (9 girls) . . . = > . . . 7 boys ahead
20 boys - 1 kamal - 7 boys ahead -> there are 12 boys after him
No of Girls = X
No of Boys = Y
X+Y = 60
X = 60 - Y----------(1)
X = 2(Y)------------(2) As No of Girls = 2(No of Boys)
from (1) and (2)
60 - Y = 2(Y)
60 = 2(Y) + Y
60 = 3Y
Y = 60/3
Y = 20
That means
No of Boys = 20
No of Girls = 60 - 20 = 40
Kamal's Rank = 17
16 ranks ahead of him
Girls ahead of him = 9
That means Boys ahead of him = 16 - 9 = 7
Kamal's rank in boys = 7+1 = 8
Boys left = Total Boys - Kamal's rank in Boys
Boys after him in the rank = 20-8
Boys after him in the rank = 12
Good Explaination
since there are twice as many girls as boys, let the number of boys be a and hence the number girls be 2 a This is the same as saying a + 2 a = 6 0 3 a = 6 0 a = 2 0 Hence there are 2 0 b o y s *and 4 0 g i r l s . *Since Kamal is ranked 17th , it means there are 16 students ahead of him of which 9 are girls and the remaining 7 are boys. This leaves us with 13boys unaccounted for including Kamal. Therefore the number of boys after him equals 1 3 − 1 = 1 2
No. of Boys = x No. of Girls = 2x Total = 60 2x+3x=60 x = 20. No. of Boys in front of Kamal = 16-9=7. No. of Boys behind Kamal = 19-7=12.
In the question, it is given that out of the 60 students, one third are boys, meaning there are 20 boys.
Kamal is ranked 17th, with 9 girls ahead. As there are 16 classmates ahead,
16-9 girls = 7 boys ahead of Kamal.
After Kamal, the remaining number of boys is as follows : 20-8=12
8 boys because they question wants boys ranked after Kamal, therefore the boys subtracted are either ahead of or ARE Kamal, which equates to 7+1=8
Therefore there are 12 boys after Kamal.
No. of boys=1/2 No of girls,Implies, No. of boys=20 and No. of girls=40. Kamal is ranked 17th,Implies There are 16 students ahead of him and it is given that 9 of them are girls. So no.of boys ahead=16-9=7. Therefore no of boys behind=(Total boys)- (No.of boys ahead of Kamal)-(Kamal)= 20-7-1=12
It is given that the girls are twice the boys and since that there are 60 students so girls are 40 and boys are 20. Since That kamal is the 17th it means that there are 16 students ahead of him. As there are 9 girls ahead of him(16-9=7) , there are 7 boys ahead. Since that we concluded there are 20 students so we are going to subtract kamal and the 7 boys ahead of him from all the 20 boys to conclude the boys after him 20-(7+1)=12
total no: of girls = 40 total no: of boys = 20 No: of boys up to top 17 = 8 becoz 9 are girls ahead No: of boys after Kamal = 12 8+12 = 20
Let the total number of boys be y , hence, number of girls will be 2 y . And there are 60 boys and girls in total, so
y + 2y = 60
y = 20
Therefore, total number of boys = 20; and girls is 40
When Kamal (a boy) , rank 17th with 9 girls before him, this means:
(Total of 16 person before Kamal) - (9 girls) = 7 boys before Kamal
And (Total number of boys) - (Numbers of boys before Kamal) - (Kamal himself) = Number of boys after Kamal
20 - 7 - 1 = 12
Total number of Students = 60, girls = 2 * boys. 2*boys+boys = 60, 3boys = 60 ==> 60/3, Total number of boys = 20, Total number of girls = 2 * 20 = 40.
kamal = 17th rank, 9 girls ahead of him. remaining 7 boys are ahead of him and 8 boys have been included with in 17 ranks. so Boys after kamal = 20 - 8 = 12 boys
As Girls = 2* Boys so among 60 there are 40 girls and 20 boys. 9 of the girls are of 17 top pupils so there left 8 pupils who are boys including kamal. So, rest of the 12 boys are after him. :)
Let No. of Boys = n Then No of Girls 2n Then Total Student = n + 2n = 60 or, 3n = 60, n = 60/3 = 20 No of Boys = 20 and No of Girls = 40 Kamal is ranked 17th it means there are 16 Student from Top. and 43 students after Kamal. But by the question, 9 girls ahead of him in the ranking i.e. in that 16 student. then (40 - 9 = 31) girls are after Kamal. Hence No of Boys after Kamal = 43 - 31 = 12.
Let the number of boys be x. Then, numbers of girls = 2x. .'. x + 2x = 60 or 3x = 60 or x = 20. So, number of boys = 20 and numbers of girls = 40. Number of students behind Kamal in rank = (60 - 17) = 43. Number of girls ahead of Kamal in rank = 9. Number of girls behind Kamal in rank = 40 - 9 = 31. .'. Number of boys behind Kamal in rank = 43 - 31 = 12.
Let x be the number of girls Let y be the number of boys so x+y=60 from the problem Girls = 2*boys x=2y it means x-2y=0 solving the two equations x+y=60 x-2y=0 number of girls x = 40 number of boys y = 20
coming back to our problem Kamal ranked 17th from top. IT means there are 16 pupils above him. out of these 16 pupil 9 are girls. so the remaining boys out of 16 pupil are 16-9=7 boys, 7 BOYS ON TOP OF KAMAL number of boys below kamal are ( TOTAL BOYS - (TOP BOYS ABOVE KAMAL + KAMAL) = Total boys 20 - ( TOP BOYS ABOVE KAMAL 7 + Kamal 1) =20-(7+1) NUMBER OF BOYS BELOW KAMAL are 12
If boys=20,then girls are twice so the count is 40,together 60 students. kamal rank is 17 from top and 9 girls are ahead of him, i.e.., there are 8 boys ahead of him(up to 16th rank). hence 20-8 were the boys after him. there fore there are 12 boys after him.
Let number of boys be x. given: twice as many boys= number of girls=2x & TOTAL NO OF STUDENTS = 2x+x = 3x=60. 9 girls are ahead of kamal and he is at 17th position s0 no of boys ahead him = 17-9=8 & 3x=60 so, x= 20 i.e. total no of boys=20. so, no of boys after him = 20-8=12
there are 9 girls and 7 boys are ahead of him and after him there left only 12 boys as total boys are 20 where as girls are 40
1st sentence..[Let boys be (x), if girls is twice (2x), 1Eqn. 2x+x=60, find x. [in which x=20] so there are 40(2*20) girls, and 20 boys...] if he is in 17th rank, and there 9 girls ahead, so this means that there are 8 boys between the rank 17.. 2Eqn. 20-8= 12. :)which gives the answer.
let us suppose no. of boys is x.
and no. of girls is y
,given x+y = 60
and 2(boys) = girls
then no. of girls = 2x
then x+2x = 60
x = 20 , kamal is 17 from top and 9 girls ahead him, then no. of boys ahead = 17-9 = 8
then boys behind him = total no. of boys - no.of boys ahead him = 20 - 8 = 12 (ans.)
So, there are 60 pupils, then the instruction says that "there are twice as much girls as boys. 60 divided by 3 is 20, hence there are 40 girls and 20 boys. From there, subtract 9 from 17 so that it equals 8. As we know, there are 20 boys and 60 girls, so, subtract 8 from 20 and you get the result, which is 12.
because there are total 20 boys and 40 girls in the class and before kamal there are 9 girls then rest of the 8 students will be boys including him till ranked 17th. so 20 minus 8 will be equal to 12.
Number of girls behind Kamal in rank = 40 - 9 = 31. .'. Number of boys behind Kamal in rank = 43 - 31 = 12.
x is boys. x + 2x = 60, 3x = 60, x = 20. boys of 17th from the top are 8 person. so 20 - 8 = 12.
Total number of students = 60 Let total number of boys = x Then total number of girls = 2*x = 2x 2x + x = 60 3x = 60 x =20 ie; number of boys = 20 Rank of Kamal = 17 Therefore, Number of students having rank ahead of Kamal =16 Number of girls having rank ahead of Kamal =9 Number of boys having rank ahead of Kamal =16 -9 = 7 Number of boys having rank after of Kamal = total number of boys - Number of boys having rank ahead of Kamal - 1(for kamal) = 20-7-1 =12
x =
number of boys in class
y =
number of girls in class
From the statement of the problem we can make 2 equations:
According to question out of 6o students, there are 20 boys and 40 girls. The rank of Kamal is 17. So there are 16 students ahead of him. Number of girls in those 16 students = 9 So Number of boys in those 16 student = 7 So Number of boys after Kamal = 20 - 7 - 1(Kamal himself) = 12
Let, the number of boys in the class be x
Therefore, number of girls = 2 x
Total number of students in the class = 60
Number of girls + Number of boys = 60
2 x + x = 60
3 x = 60
Therefore, x = 60/3 = 20 So, Number of boys = 20
Kamal is ranked 17th from the top. So, there are 16 students ahead of him out of which 9 are girls
Therefore, number of boys ahead of Kamal = (16 - 9) = 7
Number of boys till 17th rank = 7 + 1 (i.e. of Kamal) = 8
Therefore, number of boys after Kamal = Total number of boys - Number of boys till 17th rank = 20 - 8 = 12
Let no. of Boys = x. no. of girls = 2x (given) total students (boys+girls)=60; x+2x=60 => x=20 boys 20 girls 40
Now kamal Is ranked 17th so 16 people are ahead of him . If 9 of them are girls,(16-9)=7 boys are ahead of him. As there are 19 boys apart form him . Number of boys behind him (19-7)=12.
As there are double the number of girls than boys, we can take boys as 'x' and girls as '2x'. Therefore 2x+x=60, 3x=60 and x=60/3. Therefore x=20. There are x= 20 boys and 2x= 40 girls. As Kamal is ranked 17th and there are 9 girls better than him, there can only be 17-9=8 boys better than him. And as there are only 20 boys in the class, with 8 being better than him, the amount of boys worse than him is 20-8=12. Therefore the answer is 12.
Up to 17 there are boys (17-9)=8 So, boys after 17 be (20-8)=12
The boy in class is 20 and the girl is 40. Kamal is ranked 17th from the top <=> ahead of him in the ranking is 16 students = 9 girls + 7 boys. So, boys are after him is 20 - 7 - 1 = 12.
total 20 boys of which 7 are afhead of him so 20 -12 after ........as he himself is a boy
there are 20 boys and 40 girls, kamal is ranked 17th and there are 9 girls ahead of hm, so there are 8 boys that include to big-17. it follows that there are 20-8=12 boys after kamal.
there are 60 student...Twice as many girls as boys..so 40 girls and 20 boys. He is 17th from top and 9 girls ahead of him. so, there are 8 boys in first seventeen.so, there are (20-8)=12 boys after 17th position or after him
Let the no. of boys be x . Then no. of girls = 2 x . We have,
x + 2 x = 6 0 ⟹ 3 x = 6 0 ⟹ x = 2 0
So, no. of boys = 2 0 and no. of girls = 4 0
9 girls are ahead of Kamal who ranked 17. So, there are 1 7 − 9 = 8 boys including Kamal and those ahead of him.
So, boys after him = (Total no. of boys) − (No. of boys ahead of Kamal and also including Kamal) = 2 0 − 8 = 1 2
Total students = 60
Girls are twice of boys as = 40
Boys = 20
Position of Kamal = 17th
Girls ahead kamal = 9
that means remaining boys before kamal's position are = 7
and kamal itself that became 8
now,
20-8 = 12
the answer is 12
In a class of 60 where the girls are twice that of boys, you can easily figure out that there are 40 girls and 20 boys. In the question, they are asking how many people are after him, so if there's 9 girls ahead of him there must be 8 boys ahead of him, too. That leaves 12 boys which are ranked ahead of him.
60 divide by 3. then the answer subtract by 8 because 17-9.a ratio the boys to girls 1:2
A/c to given condition:- x+2x=60 => 3x=60 => x=20=boys and 2x=2(20)=40=girls since,kamal is a boy it is count in 20 boys......out of 17 students 9 are girls so, 17-9=8=boys are got rank between 1 and 17. the boys remain in class can easly by: 20-8=12 ans
Firstly girls r twice of boys in no. so out of 60 b=20, g=40.. Kamal is 17th from top...so 16 r before him of which 9 r girls as given. So till 17th rank( including Kamal) there r 8 boys. So remaining after him r 12 boys..!
tricky question since its option based,i am made an observation from answer, i add up 8 with 12 given in the answer since 8 student are boys is given and remaining are girls and their total will be 60. its my approach
there are 60 student in class.girls are twice that of boys then 20 are boys and 40 are girls.kamal is 17th from the top of students in which 9 are girls a head then 17-9=8.Now we have to find how many boys after him in he rank then 20-8=12answer we subtract 8 b/c there are 8 boys ahead of kamal.
LET THE NUMBER OF BOYS BE x,THEN NUMBER OF GIRLS ARE 2x, BUT BY GIVEN CONDITION ,x PLUS 2x EQUALS TO 60, THIS IMPLIES x EQUALS TO 20 AND 2x EQUALS TO 40 BOYS ARE 20,GIRLS ARE 40, AND KAMAL GOT 17 RAANK,AND 9 GIRLS ARE AHEAD OF HIM............IT IMPLIES THAT 7 BOYS ARE ALSO AHEAD OF HIM........... SO, REMAINING BOYS ARE AFTER HIM ARE 20 MINUS 8(7 PLUS 1 ) WHICH IS EQUAL TO 12
Kamal Rank is 17 and there are 9 girls ahead of him so we collect with a number of girls who have the highest ranking of 26 is the output so the rest of the students have the number 34 if the girls were twice that of boys we Divide the number 34 on 3 the final answer 12 boys are after him in rank.
what a boring question

Let the number of boys be x,then, number of girls = 2x. Therefore, x+2x= 3x = 60. or, x = 20. So,number of boys = 20 and number of girls = 40. Number of students behind Kamal in the rank = 60-17 = 43. Number of girls ahead of Kamal = 9. Number of girls behind Kamal = 40-9 = 31. Therefore, Number of boys behind Kamal in the rank = 43 -31 = 12.
