Rolling On A Movable Wedge!

A uniform solid spherical ball of mass m m and radius r r is rolling without slipping down on an inclined wedge of same mass. Find The velocity of wedge when the ball reaches the bottom of the wedge .

Details And Assumptions

  • Angle Of Inclination Of Wedge With The Horizontal = 45 Degrees
  • Height Of The Point From horizontal ground on the wedge from which the ball is released = 46 metre
  • Take Acceleration due to gravity = 10 SI Units
  • Neglect Air Resistance.
  • Neglect Any Toppling Effect Of The Wedge
  • The Wedge Is Free To Move Along The Horizontal Surface
  • friction is sufficient so that the ball can roll purely with respect to the wedge

The answer is 10.

Simply we let real velocity of wedge v, velocity of ball will be -v when we see relative to wedge we find vertical and horizontal component are equal as angle of inclination is 45. we find vertical velocity is 2v and w=square root{8}v/r. conserving total energy of system initial and final we get v=10.

Finally someone solved it! :) . the other person who solved it is my friend with whom i made this problem! . it has been over 5 months when i posted it

Bhaiya, how did you get that velocity of wedge and sphere will be same?

@A Former Brilliant Member because of conservation of linear momentum along x axis

aryan goyat - 4 years, 5 months ago

by conserving momentum in horizontal direction and conserving energy we can get
