Squigi Boo Saves Riji Boo!

Algebra Level 1

One day, Squigi Boo was collecting water from a 100 100 meter deep well when he heard a scream from within the well. He instantly recognised the scream to be coming from Riji Boo, and did not hesitate to slide down the well to save Riji Boo.

Squigi Boo climbed up the well in this manner: He jumps 4 4 meters up while holding Riji Boo, but will fall 1 1 meter before he clings onto the wall. How many jumps will it take for Squigi Boo to reach the top of the well with Riji Boo?

Details and Assumptions

1 1 . Fun Fact: Both Squigi Boo and Riji Boo are my classmates' nicknames. Thank you for letting me use your nicknames, without me asking for your permission.

2 2 . I wrote this just for fun and to train my writing skills.

each timeSquigi Boo jups 04 meters but falls 01 meters, so the net gain is 03 meters. In 32 attempts he climbs 96 meters. when jumps now he jumps 04 meters and reaches top of wall ie 96+4=100 meters

hahaha its 34 jumps to get out of the well :)

You made a mistake.Answer is 33.

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 11 months ago

the solution is trivial except for the fact that you have to discount the 1 meter fall on the last jump because he would have reached the top of the well jumping 4 meters on the last jump, and can therefore grab the ledge and not fall back 1 meter.

daniel yang - 7 years, 1 month ago

34 is wrong.

MarCc Matidios - 7 years, 3 months ago

90/3=30jumps ,90+6==>33 jumps from there he jumps 4meters

4 1 = 3 , 4-1=3, 96 3 = 32 , \frac{96}{3}=32, 100 96 = 4 , 100-96=4, 32 + 1 = 33 32+1=\boxed{33}

I shortened the problem statement, as it was too lengthy.

Conversely, your solution doesn't clearly explain what is happening, especially for someone who hasn't solved it yet.

I think this is what he mean. Since S.B(Squigi Boo) jumped 1 time and reach 4m, then he fall back 1m. So 4-1=3 , 3 meters per jump. there 100 meters high, while 96 meter / 3= 32, so he jumped 32 times and reach 96 meters high. Last jump he can reach 4 meters more and grabbed the edge of the well (96+4=100 meters), so he don't have to fall back. So sum up, 32+1=33 times of jump.

Sopheak Seng - 7 years, 3 months ago

at first jump he cover 4 meter but he back 1 meter so this forms an AP with first term 3 ,last term 99 and with common difference 3 so the answer is 33

JINU M.J - 7 years, 3 months ago

Its simple logic , 4 m jump , but only 3m in result , Then next 4 m (ie 8m) but result is (3(old) + 4 (now) - 1 m = 6m(result)) .

100 ( 4 1 ) = 33 \frac{100}{(4-1)} = 33

Shouldn't it be 34? Because at the 33rd jump he would be at 99m. So 1 more jump for the last metre?

rana kar - 7 years, 3 months ago

He finishs at the 33rd jump. You may understand this way: 32 jumps * (4-1) puts him at 96 meters. The next jump (4 m), puts him out , and he doesn´t fall back anymore. Therefore, the last jump (33) don't discount 1 meter anymore. :)

John Smith - 7 years, 3 months ago

Nope. after the 32nd jump, he will be at 96, at the 33rd, it will go to 100m and he will not fall over.

samuel squigi - 7 years, 3 months ago

The statement has names which are unexpectedly confusing people, so use common names.

Hasan Khan - 7 years, 3 months ago

so use common names.

Krishna Bahadur - 7 years, 3 months ago

Shouldn't he just climb for the last 1 meter? I mean, is it required to dramatically jump just to go off the well? He'd be 3 meters above the well so he should just better be climbing for the last.

Joseph Francisco - 7 years, 3 months ago

it should be 33 because after 32 jumps he is at 96m so 1 4m jump gets him out so o33

hrit gup - 7 years, 3 months ago

It should be 34

Raj Thaker - 7 years, 3 months ago

May be it could be that on his 33rd jump he just gets thrown out of the well nd no way to slide down..... So ans maybe 33 but 34's still a doubt

Harsh Mankodiya - 4 years, 7 months ago

yes.... actually it should be 34 jumps

Actually the ques asks when the reaches on top... doen't mention wether they fall back or not...

Niku Nitin - 7 years, 3 months ago

No, it would be 33 jumps. He would jump four metres, but since he's already at the edge of the well, he won't fall one metre back down the hole; he's already out of it! If the logic goes "four metres minus one metre equals three metres" then it would be 34 jumps, but you have to understand that you can't jump yet fall back down at the same time!

Agnes Fung - 7 years, 3 months ago

100/33 =33.33333.... this jump is impossible. and at 33 jump he would be at 99m. so 1 more jump for the last metre.

Dudes!! If he jumps 33 times he only reaches the 99 meters... 4-1=3 3x33 = 99

Check your answer before posting ;)

Agreed! The problem states that he'll fall back down 1 every time he goes up 4. Going to take 34 jumps to get above 100m and out of the well.

at last jump there is no way he gonna slid back back because he will be already out so jump = 4, per jump+slide = 3, 100-4=96, 96/3 =32, 32 +1 = 33 jumps

I first got the number of meters he reaches with every jump=3 meters. I already knew that 3 goes into 100 (meters of the well) 33 times. Since after he reaches the top of the well he can't fall back down, I tried 33. Hopefully this was helpful (no offence to the geniuses who use calculations..its kind of hard to understand...)

Let the number of jumps be n. Thus 4n-n =99 (Because he falls bu 1m at last) Thus n = 33

What I did was 4-1 since he jumped up 4 then fell 1. After that simply divide by 100. Although it should be 34 since 100/3 = 33 with remainder 1 so he's not fully up therefore it should be 34

If he fell every 4 meter, that means, he would just able to climb 3 meters in each trial. To get thru 100 meters, he need 33 jump, to get 99 meter. Since each climb he get 3 meter, he had spared 2 meter in fact.

He jumps up 4 meters and falls down one meter so this means he is jumping 4-1=3 metres upwards in one try so number of jumps required= 100/3=33.3 or 33 :)

given: 100meters. rate: 4m per 1 jump. for every 4meter there's -1m. 3m/jump or 1jump/3m solution: 100m x(jump/3m) = 33.33jumps approximately 33jumps.

firstly Boo holds 4-1=3m , secondly 3m too , ........ so on 32 times and reach 96m. but at last hold Boo recovers the all distance by ascending last 4m ,i maen Boo comes out from well. so Boo do not fall 1m down at last.

given : depth of well=100m squigi boo's one jump=4m,but falls 1m therefore his one jump = 4m-1m=3m number of jumps= 100/3=33.33.......=33 jumps (approx.)

Feb 14, 2014

see.... when it jumps 32 times it reaches 96m (u cn solve it by simply dividing it by 3,,, 96/3 =32) so nw it wll jump 1 mr time so its out so 32+1=33 jumps... 96+4=100m

Squigi Boo jumps 4 meter up with riji boo but fall 1 meter so 4-1= 3 meter. as well is 100 meter deep so total jumps will be 100/3 = 33.33 approx. 33 jumps.
